The football team is one of the most successful in the country having won eight national championships (1965, 1967, 1969, 1970, 1974, 1996, 1998, and 2005).

Along with Millionarios they have the most Fútbol Profesional Colombiano titles (The Colombian First Division) with 13. They are the current defending champions.

The first traditional supporter groups originated during the 1970s, such as "Estrella Roja", "El Reloj", "Sentimiento Rojo" and "Aquel 19" among others. Most of these groups still exist today and locate themselves in the east section of the stadium. In 1991, "La Furia Roja" was born, which was mainly conformed by adults from poor neighborhoods in Cali and characterized themselves with travelling long distances across the country with the team. In 1997, a group of adolescents formed America's first barra brava and named it "Baron Rojo Sur".

This game is called "el clasico vallecaucano", which translated into English means "the cauca valley derby." There is a long standing rivalry between these two teams and they have 21 titles combined (one more than Millonarios vs Santa Fe combined), making Cali one of the most important cities in this sport. The first trace of this derby match was in the final of a local tournament in 1931, where América was defeated by The Cali Football Club 0-1; the referee did not count two of América's goals because of supposed offsides plays. Due to the referee's poor performance,
América published a series of articles as a protest, leading to the team's suspension from local tournaments for a period of one year. Cali and America have played 262 "clasicos": with 95 wins for Cali, 82 wins for América and 85 draws. In 1969, Deportivo Cali defeated America and won the championship. In 1986, América obtained its fifth consecutive title in the final match against Deportivo Cali and also another title in 1992.
This match currently brings 30 to 35 thousand spectators to the stadium.

Deportivo Cali roots go all the way back to 1908 when it was founded as Cali Football Club. Their support used to be mostly upper class. America is more known as the people's club as it's from a small area on the outside of Cali. Bad vibes started in the early 30's, when after a match between the 2 teams, America's players accused the referee and Deportivo Cali of fixing the game. America was banned from the local league for some years.

After World War I (since 31 July 1922) it became the main football club of the Polish Army - Wojskowy Klub Sportowy Legia Warszawa (Military Sports Club Legia Warsaw). In the years 1949 - 1957 Legia was known by the name CWKS Warszawa (Central Military Sports Club Warsaw). Polonia is Latin for "Poland" and is often used by Polish ex-patriates in reference to their communities in other countries. The choice of such a name was a brave decision at that time, since Poland was not an independent country, and Warsaw was a part of Russian partition.

38. Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid

Madrid (Spain)

El Derbi Madrileño

Club Atlético de Madrid, S.A.D. (known in English as Atlético Madrid, Atletico Madrid or simply Atleti.) is a Spanish football club based in Madrid who play in the Primera División of La Liga. Their home stadium is the Vicente Calderón Stadium, which currently holds up to 55,000 spectators. The club is one of the most successful in Spanish League history, having won both La Liga and the Copa del Rey on nine occasions, including a double in 1996. They also won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1962 and were European Cup runners-up and Intercontinental Cup winners in 1975.

Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, usually known simply as Real Madrid) is a professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. It is the most successful team in Spanish football and was voted by FIFA as the most successful club of the 20th century, having won a record thirty-one La Liga titles, seventeen Spanish Cups, a record nine European Cups and two UEFA Cups. Real was a founding member of FIFA and the now-defunct G-14 group of Europe's leading football clubs as well as its replacement, the European Club Association.

During most home matches the majority of the seats in the stadium are occupied by season ticket holders, of which there are average of 68,670. To become a season ticket holder one must first be a socio, or club member. Not all members are able to get a season ticket. In addition to members, the club has more than 1,800 peñas (official, club-affiliated supporters' groups) in Spain and around the world. Real Madrid has the first highest average all-time attendance in Spanish football and regularly attract over 65,000 fans to Santiago Bernabéu; it was the second best-supported La Liga team in the 2004–05 season, with an average gate of 71,900.

The club has a large and diverse fanbase, who hold some long-standing rivalries with other clubs; It semiannually contests the El Clásico with FC Barcelona, its most notable rival. Some of Real Madrid's fans are the so-called Ultras Sur supporters. They are known for their right-wing politics. The Ultras Sur have developed an alliance with some S.S. Lazio Irriducibili fans. On several occasions they have racially abused opposing players, and have been investigated by UEFA for doing so.

Real Madrid and Atletico are clubs with contrasting identities and very different fates - a divide similar to Manchester's, but far more political. Historically, Real Madrid have long been seen as the establishment club; as the puppets of General Franco, led by hardline conservative Santiago Bernabéu,
aided by the government and fearful (or bent) referees.

Certainly, Franco sought to make political capital out of Real Madrid's European Cup successes at a time when Spain was internationally isolated -"Real Madrid are the best embassy we ever had," said one minister - but branding them the regime's team is harsh. Nonetheless, such perceptions have had an important impact on the city's footballing identities, tapping into self-perception. And reality.

Bernabeu, Real Madrid's stadium, is majestic alongside banks and businesses on the classy and aristocratic Castellana, while Calderon can be found beside a brewery; Real Madrid draw greater support certainly because of its successes, while Atletico has a more working-class fan base, which comes particularly from the south of the city.
